Frequently Asked Questions

Hiring an au pair or facilitator is a serious consideration; you're akin to building on an extension to your family and knowing the investment and process involved is critical to the success of the placement.  Should your question not be addressed below, please do get in touch with us.
  1. What is the turnaround time on finding the right person?

    ?

How long is a piece of string? This is totally dependent on candidates we currently have on our database or who is subsequently interviewed by us. We will only refer candidates who match your criteria and who is compatible with your family.
  2. Can you guarantee that the candidate will stay with us long term?

    ?

Unfortunately dealing with people we cannot guarantee anything! Decisions to move generally hinge on changes in the lives/opportunities of the au pairs as well as how they are treated by you. We do impress on candidates the importance of their commitment to a family but unfortunately their personal decisions are out of our control.
  3. Is an Employment Contract Important?

    ?

Absolutely!! And in line with South Africa's Basic Conditions of Employment Act, it is compulsory. In addition, a contract outlines and clarifies your expectations of the au pair / facilitator in their role.
  4. Do the same Basic Conditions of Employment apply to Fixed Term or hourly paid au pairs / facilitators?

    ?

Yes! Some elements such as leave are calculated differently but are still applicable to candidates taken on a short-term basis. Do your homework thoroughly before making the decision to hire on any length of service.
  5. What about PAYE and UIF?

    ?

As the employer, it is your responsibility to register and pay over PAYE and UIF portions. If the candidate is registered as a Provisional Tax Payer, they can then take care of this element themselves but will then need to invoice you for their time.
  6. What can I expect to pay an Au Pair or Facilitator?

    ?

On average you are looking at hourly rates between R70-R120 per hour or R6500-R10000 per month. These are guidelines only and will ultimately be determined by the number of days and hours you require them to work.
  7. Is travel included in hourly rate or monthly salary I pay?

    ?

No. All travel incurred while fetching and carrying your children or running errands on your behalf are to be reimbursed to the employee but accurate records need to be kept by the au pair and signed off by you. Recommended rate is R4.50 per km.
  8. What is the difference between an Au Pair and a Facilitator?

    ?

Au Pairs are responsible for taking care of the daily needs of your children when you are not there. Facilitators work with your child during school time as classroom support based on teacher and/or therapist recommendation.
  9. What are the benefits of using MLAP placement agency?

    ?

Your time is precious! Sifting through piles of suitable and unsuitable candidates is our job as well as their vetting. MLAP offers an holistic approach & full support provided during and after the recruitment process.
  10. What can I expect to pay a tutor?

    ?

Our primary school tutors earn R200 ph and high school tutors R300 ph. You pay the tutors direct and we invoice as per our tutor rates.
  11. How does a placement company warrant their fees?

    ?

The sourcing and validating of candidates is both labour and cost intensive. The nature of our work is highly administrative in nature to insure that you only receive max 3 candidates that suit your family.
  12. Do I need to pay a tutor for their travel expenses?

    ?

No. You are only liable for their time spent tutoring your child.
  13. Where do you source your candidates from?

    ?

We use various social media platforms, our business and personal networks that we have developed through our time of operation and through our own personal experiences as moms.
  14. Do all your candidates have qualifications?

    ?

No but for certain roles we do prefer our candidates to have completed or be studying towards a relevant qualification. We strongly believe that it is the "right" person for the job that counts the most.
  15. Do you operate outside of Gauteng?

    ?

We have recently launched our services in Cape Town with the process being managed remotely by us.
  16. Can I expect my child's tutor/facilitator to attend teacher/parent meetings?

    ?

Yes, absolutely, even if outside of their normal working hours. This is recommended especially when discussing your child's IEP. Their input could be of value to the teacher too. Remember they are part of your child's care team.
  17. Do I need to provide a meal for the au pair if their hours fall over a mealtime?

    ?

There is no right or wrong answer here. It will depend on what you agree on in your employment contract. If you are looking for someone to become part of your family, chances are they will end up staying for dinner quite often if they work later hours.
